Let’s be honest — moving a fridge is nobody’s idea of a good time. Large appliances are heavy, awkward and expensive to replace if something goes wrong. But with the right preparation they can be moved safely and without any drama. Here is everything you need to know before moving day.
Your Fridge and Freezer
Start by emptying everything out a day or two before the move. Unplug it and let it defrost completely — a wet fridge is a nightmare to move. Remove all loose shelves and bins and pack them separately in bubble wrap. If your fridge has a water dispenser or ice maker turn off the water supply and disconnect the line completely before moving day.
One important tip — fridges should always be transported upright. Laying a fridge on its side can damage the compressor. If it does get laid down accidentally let it stand upright for at least 24 hours before plugging it back in.
Your Dishwasher
Disconnect all the hoses and drain them completely. Leave the door open for a few days before the move to let it air out and dry inside. You can wrap the hoses and store them inside the dishwasher to keep everything together during the move.
Your Stove
Clean it thoroughly before moving — grease travels and will make a mess of everything it touches in the truck. Remove all detachable parts like racks and grates and pack them separately.
If you have a gas stove this is not a DIY job — you must have a qualified gas technician disconnect the line and cap it before moving. The same applies when reconnecting at your new home. Do not skip this step!
Washing Machine and Dryer
For washing machines make sure all the water is drained and the drum is completely dry. Some machines require transit bolts to be reinstalled before moving — check your manual. For dryers disconnect the vent hose and keep it safely stored inside the drum during the move.
